General GI Anatomy & Physiology

Meet the Gastrointestinal Tract!, khanacademymedicine (5:20)

This is a great intro to the GI system to kick off learning about GI anatomy.

Anatomy 6 & 7, Gastrointestinal Tract, Dr. John Campbell (24:01)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHeSVxFONrQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJyIK8xrxJ0

A great 2-part video using a model to demonstrate the different parts of the digestive system. He follows the pathway of food and talks about the different organs found in the gastrointestinal tract.

Anatomy Walkthrough for Digestive System, Gage7SLR (7:56)

This short video uses the same model as the video above and covers similar structures. However, this video also mentions some anatomical parts that were not mentioned in the above videos that are important to know.

Gastrointestinal tract, abdominal organs & blood supply, Sapiens Medicus (23:49)
Another great human cadaveric dissection focusing on the abdominal cavity and the gastrointestinal system. Lecturer shows structures and explains them as he goes. The advantage that the Acland video has over this one is that Acland’s dissection is cleaner and easier to see. However, this video is more concise.

Gastrointestinal System, University of Michigan

Abdominal Wall:  Practical Questions  and  Written Questions

Inguinal Region:  Practical Questions  and

Peritoneal Cavity & Intestines:  Practical Questions  and  Written Questions

Stomach & Spleen:  Practical Questions  and  Written Questions

Duodenum, Pancreas, Liver, & Gallbladder:  Practical Questions  and  Written Questions

University of Michigan provides a great resource to study GI anatomy. You can start with reviewing the lab manual, which contains objectives and dissection instructions. Then practice identifying structures with practical questions, and finally practice with written questions. This is a great resource to prepare for both practical exams and written exams.

Gastrointestinal Tract Playlist, Khan Academy (15 videos)

A great playlist consisting of very short videos between 5 and 10 minutes long each. The whole playlist is 1 hour and 36 minutes long. Each video in is dedicated to a specific part of the gastrointestinal tract. The videos are very concise and easy to understand.

DIgestive System Physiology, Armand Hasudungan (10:31)

A concise video that discusses the pathway of food in the body, the mechanisms of digestion in various locations and how the accessory organs contribute to digestion.

Digestive System Animation, Iken Edu (25:46)

Part 1 (16:19)

Part 2 (22:45)

These videos feature a beautiful animation of the digestive system. Part 1 discusses the general principles of the digestive system, the pathway of food and the major enzymes and organs that play a role in digestion. Part 2 goes into more depth and shows more microanatomy and how enzymes are secreted.

Stomach Anatomy and Physiology, The Study Spot (20:09)

This video discusses the anatomy of the stomach and its hysiology. Topics discussed include how hydrochloric acid is secreted in the stomach and the regulation of the digestive system in the cephalic, gastric and intestinal phases.

Stomach Anatomy & Physiology

Stomach, khanacademymedicine (5:57)

Stomach anatomy and physiology is discussed using a voiceover to explain an illustration through notes on the sides. The compression, breakdown, and hydrolysis. Chyme, bolus, and storage of food, pepsinogen, and parietal cells are also discussed.

Small Intestine Anatomy & Physiology

Small Intestine 1: Structure, khanacademymedicine (6:29)

Small Intestine 2: Digestion, khanacademymedicine (6:44)

Small Intestine 3: Absorption, khanacademymedicine (4:54)

All three videos should be seen in order. They provide a good overview to learn about the structure and functions of the small intestine. Enzymes involved, reactions, and pathways involved in digestion and absorption are briefly described.

Small Intestines, Ray Cinti (31:25)

A detailed look into what the small intestine does. This video goes into more detail about how the small intestine breaks down food than the first 2 sources above and also explores the role of the accessory organs and the substances they release into the small intestine.

Large Intestine Anatomy & Physiology

Colon, Rectum, Anus, khanacademymedicine (9:44)

With an image of the digestive tract, parts are labeled and notes are added to each portion discussed.

Control of the GI tract, khanacademymedicine (9:55)

The neuronal and hormonal signals used to control the GI tract.

Liver Anatomy & Physiology

Virtual LIver, Toronto General Hospital Department of Anesthesia

This is a great tool that allows you to learn the liver anatomy using a virtual 3D liver. You can view common anatomy by observing different components by changing the visibility. CT scans are also available to view. Another fun feature of this interactive resource is to look at different ways liver segmentation is made and a brief description on each is provided.

Liver, khanacademymedicine (6:27)

The function of the liver is described in detail at a speed you can easily follow along. Blood supply to the liver is also discussed.

Hepatic Lobule, khanacademymedicine (3:04)

The small units of the liver, hepatic lobules, contain hepatocytes. The portal triad and the six sided ring that makes up the lobule is described with a drawing to discuss the function.

Biliary Tree, khanacademymedicine (5:59)

This video describes how bile is made in the liver and how it continues on to the intestines.

Liver Anatomy and Blood Supply, Armando Hasudungan (8:11)

Through drawings, liver anatomy and blood supply are explained. Notes are included around the diagram to put all the info together. Hepatic and portal veins are discussed in detail based on the liver. In under 10 minutes, this video does a great job to help you gain a good understanding about liver anatomy.

Liver Explained Clearly, MEDCRAMvideos (14:05)

Illustrations of the anatomy are drawn at a pace that you can follow along and even draw yourself to see how the liver functions. The video also describes blood tests.

Liver Physiology, Armando Hasudungan (14:55)

Synthesis of amino acid is described first and then the next steps are described in a flow chart drawn in a liver to see what occurs in sequence. Bile is also explained through handdrawn diagrams that are detailed with descriptions also written next to the illustrations. The combination of drawings, text, and explanations helps you quickly understand liver physiology.

Gross anatomy of the liver, Human Anatomy Education (6:20)

This video uses a cadaveric liver to walk through liver anatomy.

What does the liver do? - Emma Bryce, TED-Ed (3:24)

Basic information, but very clear with analogies, well spoken, and well illustrated to give a basic understanding of what the liver does.

Pancreas Anatomy & Physiology

Exocrine Pancreas khanacademy (9:49)

Endocrine Pancreas, khanacademy (6:50)

This is a great overview of the different functions of the pancreas. Exocrine pancreas talks about the enzymes and salts released into the GI system during food intake while endocrine pancreas talks about the functions of pancreatic islet cells.
